NEWS SECTION

The 5th Wilhelm Furtwängler-Tage takes place in Jena on November 18-21, 2004. For more information, see 5. Wilhelm Furtwängler-Tage.

An updated list of broadcasts of performances conducted by Wilhelm Furtwängler between 1930 and 1954 has been added to Radio and TV Programmes in the subject section

A new Furtwängler society The Wilhelm Furtwängler Centre of Japan has been established under the patronage of Mrs. Elisabeth Furtwängler in October 2003. Their home page is available in English, French as well as Japanese. One of their main aims is to produce CDs for their members in the best possible sound quality, i.e. as close as possible to the sound of the original recordings. These CDs are issued in their Hallmark Collection.

The much discussed American broadcast on Wilhelm Furtwängler by Lee Schipper in October 2003 can be listened to here - go to the bottom of the opened link to the programme entitled Hitler's conductor.

March 2003 saw the publication of a mammoth biography (in German) of Wilhelm Furtwängler:

Haffner, Herbert: Furtwängler / Herbert Haffner. - Berlin : Parthas Verlag, 2003. - 494 p. : ill. - (Arte Edition). - ISBN 3-932529-45-6 : EUR 38.00.

The publisher's note for Herbert Haffner's new book reads:

Parts of the Japanese Wilhelm Furtwängler Society home page is now available in English - you'll have to click on links in Japanese to find the English pages.

The new French Furtwängler Society home page is available at Société Wilhelm Furtwängler home page - Enjoy!

A substantial biography of Wilhelm Furtwängler is found in Peter Gutmann's Classical Notes

Table of Contents

Introduction

In 1970 and 1973 I published two editions of Wilhelm Furtwängler - a discography, at that time considered to be the most complete listings of recordings by Wilhelm Furtwängler - the German conductor and composer....
Now I'm trying to collect and classify the most complete list of links to Wilhelm Furtwängler.
When searching these pages you'll have to be aware of the following orthographic differences: Furtwängler, Furtwangler, Furtwaengler, Fürtwangler and Fürtwängler.

Here is a very important link for all those who did not see or hear Furtwängler alive, Wilhelm Furtwängler dirigiert die Wiener Philharmoniker, 1951. This film was shot in the (old) Festspielhaus in Salzburg on August 31, 1951. (The site gives the erroneous date: 1950!)

Don't miss the two important books by René Trémine, published 1997 and available from:
Productions TAHRA, 1 Allée Georges Bizet, F-95870 Bezons, France:

Wilhelm Furtwängler - Concert listing 1906-1954, and:
Wilhelm Furtwängler - A discography

Links Arranged According to Language

The basic search for links was carried out in November 1997 using the ALTAVISTA searching facilities. About 1,900 links were found forming the basis of the alfabetical section of this site, presenting links arranged according to language. Due to the great number of links in English and German, they were divided into sections each containing about 100-200 links. I have tried to delete all doubles, too.
A general update took place in January 1998.
In March 1998, however, a different algorithm was used for a completely new search of the WWW.
In May 1998 a new update took place, adding about 700 new links.
About 300 new links were added in July 1998.
More than 200 links were added in September 1998.
About 70 new links were added in November 1998.
At the very end of the year 1998, about 20 new links were added.
About 250 new links were added in March 1999.
May 1, 1999, more than 1,500 links were added - including an update covering the search period from January 1 to February 28 (labeled "NEW!!" below).
More than 1,000 links were added in July 1999.
About 130 new links were added in September 1999.
About 140 links were added in November 1999.
More than 300 new links were added in January 2000.
About 500 new links were added in March 2000.
More than 700 new links were added in May 2000.
July 1, 2000: About 1,400 new links were added.
September 1, 2000: 570 new links added - furthermore, some links were added directly to the subject section.
More than 200 new links were added in November 2000.
About 140 new links added in January 2001.
March 1, 2001, more than 375 new links were added.
456 new links were added in May 2001.
More than 50 - very few indeed! - new links were added in July 2001.
A little more than 100 new links were added September 1, 2001.
8 new links were added November 1, 2001.
15 new links were added January 1, 2002.
More than 1,900 new links were added March 3, 2002.
90 new links were added May 1, 2002.
More than 100 new links were added July 1, 2002.
More than 2,800 new links were added September 1, 2002.
About 110 new links were added November 1, 2002.
More than 430 new links were added January 3, 2003.
117 new links were added March 2, 2003.

This section includes all valid links, thus more links may lead to one and the same site.

New links are added every two month.
As far as possible, all links are maintained and updated.
Latest general update: February 28, 2003.

Apart from the English, French, German, Italian, Japanese, and Spanish pages, these link pages are arranged according to the chronology of the various updates and are headed by the latest update.
The editing is finished when no serial number is shown in front of the links (valid up to February 28, 2001); as from March 1, 2001, editing is finished when no language is shown in the entries.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

As from March 1, 2003 no new links has been added to the Furtwängler pages. The primary reason for that is the explosive growth in the number of Furtwängler links and lack of time to maintain them.
However, instead of closing down the site, I hereby give you the possibility of creating a search for any Furtwängler link you want:

  1. Open ALTAVISTA - advanced search
  2. Insert the following boolean expression excactly as written: Furtwängler OR Furtwangler OR Furtwaengler OR Fürtwangler OR Fürtwängler
  3. Select the time period
  4. Select the language

This search will create a little noise, since it will also include other persons than the conductor/composer Wilhelm Furtwängler.
A search for Fortwängler OR Fortwangler also creates a few usably links.

Links Arranged According to Subjects

In March 1998, a new general search was carried out to form the basis of the subject section of this site. The subject section presents links arranged according to subjects - and is still progressing... unfortunately, very slowly!
For each subject listed links are arranged according to language.
September 1, 2000: 45 new links were added directly to the subject "Furtwängler Iconography", furthermore 17 links were added directly to the subject "Audio Files".
Latest update as of February 28, 2003.

For each subject listed this section excludes multiple links and includes only one link leading to one and the same site.
